Donald Trump is no stranger to outrageous conspiracies or peculiar social media posts. Yet, by any standard, his post on Saturday night was notably odd. The president shared (and later deleted) a clip on Truth Social featuring a Fox News segment where Lara Trump talked about the White House’s launch of the world’s first MedBed hospital and a national MedBed card system—neither of which exist. There was no further explanation or text accompanying it. To add to the confusion, the video was seemingly entirely AI-created, with Trump himself discussing the initiative in the Oval Office. (One clear hint of its artificial nature was the president’s unexpected adherence to the script.)
For those who steer clear of the more QANON-sided areas of the internet, MedBeds are a fictional medical device rumored to do everything from curing asthma, regrowing lost limbs, to healing cancer. The allure of a universal cure-all device is evident, but the belief that these are real products supposedly kept from Americans by Big Pharma has been spreading among conspiracy theorists in recent years.
Many of the president’s followers recognized that the video was AI-produced but still appeared to believe that Trump was validating the existence of MedBeds. Whatever the intention of the post was, we might never find out. The president often sends messages into the public domain without explanation. With the video now removed, the White House will probably attempt to dismiss the entire episode.
