Spotify is testing a new feature that empowers users to craft personalized playlists through AI prompts, expanding on the concept behind the Discover Weekly playlist. Known as Prompted Playlists, this feature debuts in New Zealand on Thursday. Users can describe their desired listening experience in as much detail as they wish, allowing Spotify’s AI to generate a playlist tailored to their instructions and listening habits.
This innovative approach also enables users to schedule regular updates for their Prompted Playlists, consistently introducing fresh tracks based on their initial prompts. Essentially, it offers a Discover Weekly playlist experience with user-driven algorithmic control. While Discover Weekly recently added genre prioritization options, it still doesn’t allow users to directly influence the playlist algorithm beyond that.
Prompted Playlists are part of Spotify’s broader initiative to enhance user control. Earlier this year, the AI DJ feature was upgraded to accept voice prompts, reflecting a trend seen across digital platforms. Similarly, Instagram recently unveiled a feature enabling users to specify their content preferences for its algorithm.
