In the realm of modern horror, the idea that “the real monster is trauma” often seems overplayed. Films such as Hereditary, The Babadook, and to a lesser extent, Smile, have explored this theme. However, the 2020 movie His House stands out as a masterful use of this trope.

The narrative centers on Bol and Rial, refugees from South Sudan, portrayed by Sope Dirisu and Wunmi Mosaku. Both actors deliver exceptional performances that are not commonly seen in horror films, elevating His House beyond typical genre offerings. Mosaku, in particular, brings a depth and charisma to her role that deserves widespread recognition.

While compelling performances are a bonus, audiences flock to horror for the thrills, and His House does not disappoint. The couple is assigned to a dilapidated home on the fringes of London, complete with crumbling walls, peeling wallpaper, and unreliable electricity. Despite these conditions, it represents a chance to escape the horrors of civil war and genocide back home.

Director and writer Remi Weekes wastes no time in building suspense. While there are the expected jump scares, the film excels in creating a pervasive atmosphere of dread. The unease is not just confined to the mysterious sounds within the house but extends to the hostile environment of their new neighborhood. Interactions with locals are fraught with tension and latent hostility.

Even those meant to assist Bol and Rial, like their caseworker Mark, portrayed by Matt Smith, barely conceal their disdain for the couple. As Bol struggles to adapt to British life, he is haunted by survivor’s guilt and memories of those left behind. Flashbacks gradually unveil the harrowing journey Bol and Rial endured to escape South Sudan and the haunting secrets they carry.

His House is a remarkable film that seamlessly intertwines supernatural elements with the stark realities of human suffering and emotional depth. For those who appreciate horror with a profound emotional impact, His House is available for streaming on Netflix.
