World of Warcraft is getting a new kind of fake money

The eagerly anticipated introduction of Housing in World of Warcraft is set to bring an extra cost for players. In addition to maintaining your monthly subscription and purchasing the Midnight expansion, some Housing elements will necessitate a new in-game currency called “Hearthsteel,” which players must acquire using real money. This development adds to the already extensive list of currencies within the game, which at one point saw its primary currency, gold, surpass the Venezuelan bolivar in value.

In a recent announcement on their blog, Blizzard revealed that Hearthsteel will be exclusively used for Housing purposes, and it will not impact the Trading Post, mounts, or other in-game items. Moreover, Blizzard assured players that not every Housing item will require Hearthsteel for acquisition.

“The vast majority of Housing items are (and will continue to be) earnable in-game. Only a small fraction is available for purchase from the shop. Comparing this number against collectibles such as mounts is a good metric here, with more than a thousand mounts earnable in-game and only a few dozen from the shop.”
