Microsoft is updating its impactful Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) by introducing a new black version. This marks the first significant redesign since Windows 8, when Microsoft enhanced the BSOD with a sad face, which is now being removed along with the QR code to present a cleaner black screen.

The revamped BSOD is being released to Windows 11 Release Preview users today, with plans for it to be available to all Windows 11 users in the coming weeks. The more streamlined BSOD bears a strong resemblance to the black screen displayed during Windows updates.

This version will display the stop code and faulty system driver, making it simpler for users and IT admins to identify the cause of a BSOD on their PCs. “The aim here is to improve clarity, provide better information, and help us and our customers pinpoint the core issue so it can be resolved more swiftly,” remarked David Weston, Microsoft’s vice president of enterprise and OS security, during an interview with The Verge in June.

Microsoft did briefly turn the BSOD to a black screen in test builds of Windows 11 in 2021 , but this time it’s making the change permanent. The change to the BSOD arrives as part of an update to Windows 11 that also includes Microsoft’s new Quick Machine Recovery (QMR) feature, which is designed to quickly restore machines that can’t boot properly. QMR is part of larger effort by Microsoft to improve the resiliency of Windows in the wake of last year’s CrowdStrike incident.
