David Milgaard Death Cause
David Milgaard, who spent 23 years in jail for a rape and murder he did not commit, died last weekend in a Calgary hospital, according to a family source. The reason for Milgaard’s death remains unknown.
Gail Miller, a Saskatoon nurse, was found in a snowbank in 1969 when the Winnipeg guy was 16 and traveling through Saskatchewan with companions. Milgaard was convicted at the age of 17 and spent 23 years in jail battling to establish his innocence before being exonerated.
After fresh DNA evidence tied renowned rapist Larry Fisher to the murder, the Supreme Court of Canada overturned Milgaard’s conviction in 1992.
David Milgaard’s Settlement Amount
The federal government asked the Supreme Court of Canada to consider a reference question, and the court recommended that Milgaard’s conviction be overturned.
Milgaard was effectively exonerated of the crime on July 18, 1997, when a DNA laboratory in the United Kingdom produced a report indicating that semen samples on the victim’s clothing did not originate from Milgaard.
RIP David Millgaard
The lesson I learned from you and your family is the importance of speaking out against injustices. Unfortunately, each injustice that is allowed to stand paves the way for the next injustice.

Following that, the Saskatchewan government apologized for the erroneous conviction. Milgaard was awarded $10 million CAD in compensation for pain and suffering, lost wages, and legal expenses on May 17, 1999, when the Canadian and Saskatchewan governments announced a deal with him.
