Cheech Marin was not in an accident and did not get his legs amputated. Alfonso Marin was involved in an accident and had his leg amputated, and Cheech’s fans were confused due to the identical surname.

On December 3, 2004, Alfonso had just dropped off coworkers at their construction site when an SUV drove into him at 172nd Street and Broadway in midtown Manhattan, trapping his left leg against the van and breaking his femur.

Alfonso was rushed to a nearby hospital with a cold, pulseless leg. He was diagnosed with severe trauma and massive degloving to his left lower extremity, including multiple comminuted segmented fractures, a complete transection of the bone, and lacerated blood vessels, including the major artery and vein, resulting in extensive blood loss.

Alfonso’s leg was eventually amputated above the knee following many hours of surgery. Alfonso sued the motorist who struck him and was awarded his entire $100,000 policy limits.
