The Princeton Review’s annual ranking of the best “party colleges” in the US was released in 1997, Kreischer’s sixth year at FSU, and FSU came in first place. Kreischer was the subject of a six-page piece in Rolling Stone published later that year, which referred to him as “the top partyer at the Number One Party School in the country.” The piece, “Bert Kreischer: The Undergraduate,” described Kreischer’s party antics, which included instances of excessive drinking and indiscreet narcissism.

Oliver Stone optioned the rights to Kreischer’s life based on a Rolling Stone story. All of the scripts that were submitted were returned to their writers once the development agreement with Oliver Stone fell through. When one of these authors sold the script to National Lampoon, they altered Kreischer’s name. This served as the inspiration for the Ryan Reynolds-starring 2002 comedy picture National Lampoon’s Van Wilder.

Kreischer said to the New York Post in 2014 when questioned about his role in the movie, “I’ve never seen it. I played no part in it. Kreischer discussed how National Lampoon officials told him that he was the inspiration for the movie on a podcast with Joe Rogan. Additionally, he affirmed that he would never take National Lampoon to court for the production of the movie without his input.
