Grinstead graduated from Middle Georgia College in 1998 and began teaching at Ocilla’s Irwin County High School. An Irwin County Probate judge declared Grinstead dead in absentia in December 2010.

Initially, Duke spontaneously and unsolicited admitted to murdering Grinstead after sneaking into her home to steal money for narcotics, according to a Georgia Bureau of Investigation agent testifying at a pretrial hearing. DNA matching both Duke and Grinstead was also detected on a latex glove located in her yard, according to GBI officials.

According to Duke’s attorneys, he gave a false confession while under the influence of narcotics. According to court documents, Duke was sleeping at home when Grinstead was murdered and it was Bo Dukes who killed her. Duke risks an automatic life sentence if found guilty of murder.
