Jurors in the trial of a woman accused of lying about being the victim of an Asian grooming gang have been shown the hammer she allegedly used to injure herself.

Police found Eleanor Williams, 21, hurt near her home in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, in May 2020 and were told she had been attacked and forced to have sex with three Asian men at a house in the town, her trial at Preston Crown Court has heard.

The prosecution allege Williams caused the injuries to herself using a claw hammer recovered from the field.

The weapon, which was in an evidence bag and had ‘extensive blood staining’, was passed around members of the jury on Tuesday. Photos of her alleged self-inflicted injuries were also shown to the court.

Honorary Recorder of Preston, Judge Robert Altham, told jurors it would be ‘extremely undesirable’ for anyone to touch the exhibit but if they feel they need to take it out of the packaging at a later stage, arrangements may be made.

Williams, of Teasdale Road, Walney, bought a similar hammer in Tesco eight days before the supposed attack, the court heard.

Forensic scientist Jasmine Mears said DNA profiles found on the hammer matched Williams and it is a billion times more likely that DNA found on the shaft and handle of the hammer belong to her than to anyone else.

She said there was no indication of anyone else’s profile on the hammer, although she said it is possible for someone to touch an item and not leave traceable DNA.

Photographs of Williams’ injuries, including a swollen eye, cut finger and bruises to her arms and legs, were shown to the jury.

Preston Crown Court heard that Williams claimed to have been taken in by a grooming gang aged 12 or 13 and repeatedly abused over the years, culminating in the alleged attack in May 2020. She is accused of falsifying her story

Home Office pathologist Dr Alison Armour said the images show Williams had eight injuries to her head and face, including bruising and swelling to her right eye.

She said the pictures also showed a cut to her left little finger and bruises, which were roughly circular in shape, to her arms.

There were also circular bruises to the front of her abdomen as well as superficial abrasions, which Dr Armour said were consistent with scratching with fingernails.

Referring to bruises on the front of Williams’ left leg, Dr Armour said: ‘In my opinion, the bruises were too numerous to count.’

She also identified bruises, which were circular in shape and merging, to the front of her right thigh.

Earlier in the trial, the court was told that Williams claimed to have been taken in by a grooming gang aged 12 or 13 and repeatedly abused over the years, culminating in the alleged attack in May 2020.

Williams denies seven counts of doing acts tending and intended to pervert the course of justice.

The trial will continue on Wednesday.
