Two of Jerry Buss’ children were raised by his ex-girlfriend Karen Demel. Buss was a successful American businessman, investor, scientist, and philanthropist.
He served as the primary shareholder of the National Basketball Association’s Los Angeles Lakers (NBA). Ten league championships have been won by his franchise, the 1980s Showtime era being the most memorable.
He belongs to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a contributor. Buss was the owner of more professional sports teams in Southern California.
He was a self-made guy whose tale of rising from poverty to riches embodied the American Dream. Buss, a child of the Great Depression who was raised in poverty in Wyoming, had to deal with the hardships of a blue-collar life and had to start working at a young age.
Buss started his profession by getting up at 4:30 in the morning to dig trenches on icy ground for three hours before school.

Later in high school, Buss worked at a local hotel for $2 per day.
In order to work for the railroad, he left school. He eventually went back and completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Wyoming. The University of Southern California also awarded him a Ph.D. in physical chemistry.
After graduating from USC and earning money from his first job, Buss teamed up with four other partners in 1959 to purchase a 14-unit rental building in West Los Angeles.
With a $6,000 down payment and a $100,000 bank loan, he made his first investment.
Eighteen years after making this $6,000 down payment, Buss turned it into a $350 million real estate empire.
