UFC 254 Full Fight Video: Watch Khabib Nurmagomedov Submit Dustin Poirier

A lightweight title unification bout served as the main event of UFC 242 fight card. In that matchup, titleholder Khabib Nurmagomedov faced interim champ Dustin Poirier. Nurmagomedov entered the contest as the -500 favorite, while Poirier came into the octagon as the +350 underdog.

The bout started slowly as the two looked to gauge distance. When Nurmagomedov attempted his first takedown, he set up his entry nicely with a crisp combination of punches. After a brief struggle, Nurmagomedov got the fight to the mat and worked to take Poirier’s back. He attempted a brief neck crank before unloading with strikes. Those strikes opened up another neck crank. Poirier briefly regained his feet, but he could not separate from Nurmagomedov, who tripped him to the mat. The fight went back to standing. An attempted switch by Poirier failed. That move put the interim champ back on the mat. The round ended with Nurmagomedov unloading powerful strikes to his downed opponent.

Nurmagomedov’s confidence seemed to surge between rounds. Early in the second stanza, he began talking to Poirier. Poirier’s response was to push forward and landed a flurry of strikes that got Nurmagomedov’s attention. Nurmagomedov gained his first takedown of the round 1:15 into the second stanza. Like he did in the first round, Nurmagomedov held Poirier on the ground close to the cage and forced him to carry his weight on the mat. Nurmagomedov then pushed Poirier against the cage and opened a cut on his left eye. The wound seemed to bother Poirier as he kept reaching for it. Poirier was able to get to his feet. In reaction to that, Nurmagomedov scored another takedown. Nurmagomedov could not hold Poirier down for a considerable amount of time, but Poirier again could not circle off the cage and another trip takedown followed. The round ended with Nurmagomedov holding Poirier against the fence and landing a knee.

Poirier walked back to his corner and if language is any sign of a fighter’s mindset, Poirier was not in good shape. He told his coaches, “I can’t get him the (expletive) off me, man.”

Poirier opened the third stanza by attempting a guillotine choke. It was a tight technique, but Nurmagomedov did not panic and he was able to slip free. Not long after that, Nurmagomedov took Poirier’s back and sneaked in a rear-naked choke. Poirier tapped to the hold at the 2:06 mark of the round. The submission gave Nurmagomedov the undisputed title and moved his record to a perfect 28-0.

In a show of respect, the two fighters exchanged shirts. Nurmagomedov gave his post-fight interview among his family and coaches wearing Poirier’s shirt. He then said that he would sell the shirt and donate the proceeds to Poirier’s charity.

There were not a lot of significant strikes landed in this contest. That was due to the time the fighters spent on the ground and against the cage. Nurmagomedov landed 22 of 41 significant strikes. Ten of those strikes landed at distance, one in the clinch and 11 on the ground. As far as total strikes, Nurmagomedov landed 54 of 77 and landed seven of his eight takedown attempts. He also racked up five guard passes/advances during the bout and two submission attempts. Poirier’s significant strike numbers were 12 of 39. All 12 of those strikes landed at distance. Poirier scored 30 of 57 total strikes. Poirier did not attempt a takedown, but he got one submission attempt during the scrap.

On Saturday, Nurmagomedov puts his lightweight title on the line against interim 155-pound champion, Justin Gaethje. UFC 254 takes place on Saturday from Fight Island in Abu Dhabi. The event takes place much earlier than a normal UFC pay-per-view event. The ESPN+ streaming main card begins at 2:00 p.m ET. Following prelims on ESPN2 and ESPN+ at noon ET and early prelims on UFC Fight Pass and ESPN+ at 11:00 a.m. ET.
