UFC On ESPN+ 36 Stats Preview: Head-To-Head Look At Khamzat Chimaev Vs. Gerald Meerschaert

It didn’t take the UFC long to fall in love with Khamzat Chimaev.

Chimaev made his UFC debut on July 15 on Fight Island in Abu Dhabi. Chimaev scored a submission win over John Phillips in that middleweight scrap. Ten days later, Chimaev earned a knockout win over Rhys McKee on another card from Fight Island. That matchup took place at welterweight. Chimaev won fight-night bonus awards in both of those wins.

Tonight, Chimaev faces Gerald Meerschaert in a middleweight bout on the main card of UFC on ESPN+ 36, which takes place at UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Meerschaert, a former RFA middleweight champion, has been with the UFC since 2016. During his UFC career, Meerschaert has a record of 6-5. He is coming off a TKO loss to Ian Heinisch in June.

UFC president Dana White is so high on Chimaev that he has already booked him a fight against former UFC title contender Demian Maia in Abu Dhabi. That fact does not sit well with Meerschaert who feels disrespected by the UFC.

Chimaev is a huge favorite over Meerschaert at -450. Meerschaert comes in as the +325 underdog. While I think that Chimaev deserves to be the favorite in this contest, I do not think the odds reflect just how dangerous Meerschaert can be on the ground.

Below is a look at how the two men matchup against each other.

UFC on ESPN+ 36 takes place at UFC Apex on Saturday, September 19. The event streams on ESPN+.
