THE ESSEX FILES: Jared Isaacman’s NASA Nomination: The Right Man for a Real Space Race

Jared Isaacman addressed the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee on Wednesday with a stark reminder: Space is not merely an extension of scientific exploration; it is a critical strategic domain where the United States cannot afford to fall behind. Isaacman, the billionaire entrepreneur behind Shift4 Payments and the leader of the all-civilian Inspiration4 mission, who also made history as the first private citizen to perform a spacewalk, has been nominated by former President Trump to head NASA.

Initially nominated in January, Isaacman’s candidacy was withdrawn in June due to procedural issues but was reintroduced last month. He is now on the brink of succeeding Sean Duffy, the current acting administrator. If confirmed, Isaacman is poised to take the helm of an agency that many believe has been coasting on autopilot for too long. The hearing, led by Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) and attended by ranking member Maria Cantwell (D-WA), showcased a rare moment of bipartisan consensus. Cruz emphasized the importance of the U.S. maintaining its leadership in space, while Cantwell highlighted the strategic significance of establishing a sustained presence on the Moon for both economic growth and national security.

Even Sen. Tim Sheehy (R-MT) arrived armed with forty letters of support and spoke of a moral obligation to lead on the greatest frontier humanity has ever known. Isaacman did not disappoint. He warned that a single misstep could leave America unable to catch up, with consequences that “could shift the balance of power here on Earth.”
