A Missouri woman faces charges of domestic assault after a heated altercation with her boyfriend escalated into violence, involving garden shears and an attempted vehicular attack with his truck.

Cheri Newark, 48, has denied allegations that she attempted to run over her boyfriend with his truck as he sought refuge inside their home, according to a report by KTLO.

During an interview with deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Newark insisted, “I would never try to run him over. If I was gonna run him over, I would run him over, you know what I’m saying?”

A probable cause statement reveals that the conflict began with an argument, prompting the boyfriend to attempt to leave in his truck. Newark reportedly followed him into the vehicle, where she allegedly assaulted him by hitting, kicking, and throwing objects at him. The altercation turned physical, with the boyfriend reportedly biting Newark’s hand in the struggle.

Both Newark and her boyfriend claimed self-defense during the incident. Newark admitted to striking him in the head with garden shears, which resulted in documented injuries: contusions on his torso and a three-inch laceration on his head. Newark herself sustained a bruise under her eye and a cut on her thumb.

Following the attack with the shears, the boyfriend exited the truck and ran toward the house. Newark allegedly took control of the truck and drove toward him. He managed to dodge her by hiding behind a tree. After Newark drove past, he hurried inside, secured the doors, and called 911 for assistance.

Newark broke the screens on two windows trying to get in before deputies arrived.

In addition to a charge of domestic assault causing serious injury, Newark is charged with armed criminal action. She was released from jail on Friday on her own recognizance.

The boyfriend was not charged.
