Renowned CNN journalist Christiane Amanpour has disclosed that she is facing a third diagnosis of ovarian cancer.

Speaking on the “Changing the Ovarian Cancer Story” podcast on Thursday, the 67-year-old shared that her condition is “being very well managed.”

“I had all the necessary organs removed, but the cancer reappeared a couple of times in a lymph node,” Amanpour explained to host Hannah Vaughan Jones.

Her oncologist shed light on her condition, noting that Amanpour has a rare form of ovarian cancer, constituting less than 10% of cases.

“By the time most women receive a diagnosis, they might have had the cancer for three or four years without knowing,” Dr. Angela George commented during the podcast.

Dr. George highlighted the challenges of diagnosing ovarian cancer, pointing out its lack of specific symptoms, which often leads to prolonged misdiagnosis.

‘I was potentially lucky because there were actually pain symptoms,’ Amanpour said. ‘There’s often no symptoms so many women don’t know, so I feel that I was lucky.’

The journalist is currently undergoing immunotherapy, which she said has had no side effects and is the ‘opposite of grueling’.

Amanpour has routine check-ups every three months, which is how her cancer was detected so quickly the second and third times.

She described the routine monitoring as a ‘superb insurance policy’ and expressed gratitude towards her family, friends and colleagues for their support.

‘I never actually asked for help before… and when I did, I got it,’ she said. ‘It really sustained me because it’s not just the illness, it’s the state of mind.

‘To have all these people who just literally every day were asking me how I was, how they could help… the community is actually vital and I’m just so very lucky that I had that.’

Amanpour was first diagnosed with ovarian cancer in May 2021 after a doctor found a grapefruit-sized cyst on her right ovary.

After further testing, she was diagnosed with stage 2 ovarian clear cell carcinoma. She underwent a major surgery, followed by 18 weeks of chemotherapy.

Ovarian cancer is often discovered at stage 3 or 4, leaving many women hopeless of options and with low survival rates. Amanpour was one of the few whose cancer was caught early.

Ovarian cancer does not have a screening and can oftentimes be mistaken for small health problems, such as urinary tract infections, bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, trouble eating, menstrual pain, or pain during sex

Unlike breast cancer, ovarian cancer does not have a screening and can oftentimes be mistaken for small health problems, such as urinary tract infections, bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, trouble eating, menstrual pain, or pain during sex.

Amanpour has since urged women to be proactive about their health and take steps to catch ovarian cancer early.

She encouraged women to get ‘regular screenings and scans,’ listen to their bodies and ‘ensure that your legitimate medical concerns are not dismissed or diminished.’
