Ilhan Omar has recently revised her earlier comments regarding an ICE shooting incident in her home state, acknowledging that the federal agent fired his weapon while standing in front of a “moving car.” The Minnesota Congresswoman had initially suggested that the vehicle driven by Renee Nicole Good, a mother of three who was killed in the incident, did not threaten ICE officer Jonathan ‘Jon’ Ross last Wednesday. During an interview on CNN’s “Face The Nation” on Sunday, Omar confirmed that Good’s SUV was indeed in motion at the time of the Minneapolis shooting last week.
Omar described the footage from the event, stating, “Renee Nicole Good can be seen sitting calmly in her car, waving other vehicles by. The agent approaches her vehicle, attempting to open her door, causing her to panic and try to steer away. Another officer, clearly aware the car is moving, steps in front of it. If he has a decade of service and training, he should understand the danger of positioning himself in front of a moving vehicle.”
Omar’s Earlier Comments
Previously, during an appearance on CNN with Jake Tapper just four days earlier, the Democratic lawmaker challenged President Trump’s assertion that the ICE agent acted in “self-defense.” Omar argued, “That statement is incredibly misleading. The video clearly shows that no ICE agent was knocked down or run over. To distort an event that is plainly visible to everyone reveals how alarmingly disconnected our president is from reality.”
‘But the people have their own eyes, they can make their own judgment, and certainly when this investigation is over we are going to know really what has taken place, and I hope that leads to accountability’. The Daily Mail has contacted Omar’s office for comment on the two statements. She shifted her version of events after Ross’s own bodycam was released on Friday and showed his camera jerking as Good drove off in her final moments. Good’s final moments have been immortalized through bloodcurdling videosshot from several angles, as the country reels over who is to blame for her death.
One clip shows the interaction the 37-year-old had with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent Ross before he fatally shot her in the head. The Minneapolis resident and poet can be heard saying from inside her car: ‘That’s fine, dude. I’m not mad.’ Her wife, Rebecca Good, 40, could be heard urging Ross, who wore a face covering, to ‘show his face’ as she asked him: ‘You want to come at us?’ As the tension mounted, Good was told to get out of the car, but ignored orders. She began revving the engine and drove off during what the Trump Administration said was part of a protest against the planned detention of Somali migrants in the area. Ross’s camera then jerked. It is unclear if he was struck by the car or jumped to get out of its way.
Federal Officials Claim Shooting Was Self-Defense Amid Backlash
The ICE agent fired three shots, including one through the front windshield of the Honda, that struck and killed Good. Federal officials have claimed the shooting was an act of self-defense, while the city’s mayor had condemned it as ‘reckless’ and unnecessary. The Minnesota city was rocked by the murder of George Floyd by a police officer just over five years ago, and residents are now reeling from another controversial act of violence by a law enforcement official. Meanwhile, Trump has condemned Good, insisting that she plowed over Ross and he is lucky to be alive. ‘She behaved horribly,’ Trump told the New York Times. ‘And then she ran him over. She didn’t try to run him over. She ran him over.’
