Walmart is at the center of a new food recall involving celery. Duda Farm Fresh Foods has pulled its Marketside celery sticks from stores in 29 states over possible contamination. The company voluntarily recalled 1,587 cases of the washed and ready-to-eat sticks, which come in packs of four, on April 10.

They are linked to a potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The issue was found during a random sampling by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. No illnesses or deaths have been reported so far, but the FDA is urging customers to throw the celery away or return it.

Shoppers with questions can contact Duda Farm Fresh Foods Inc. at foodsafety@duda.com. The products, which were sold at Walmart stores, include a ’03/23/2025′ best used by date with a UPC number of 6 81131 16151 0 and lot code number of P047650. Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can often be found in meats, soft cheeses, and seafood.

It is one of the top reasons for product recalls, and about 1,600 individuals get Listeriosis every year. While it can cause severe health problems for anyone who ingests the contaminated items, it is most likely to affect pregnant women, adults aged 65 and over, and those with weakened immune systems.

Shoppers exposed to the bacteria could suffer from symptoms like fever, chills, nausea, or diarrhea. Listeria that spreads beyond the digestive system could make someone experience confusion, loss of balance, or seizures. Depending on the severity of the situation, Listeria can cause other serious complications like pneumonia, sepsis, urinary tract infections, and death.

Symptoms will usually appear anytime between a few days to a couple of weeks after contaminated food consumption. Although it’s not contagious, pregnant women can transmit it to their unborn child during pregnancy or childbirth.

Multiple recalls have already been issued this year due to potential or definite listeria contamination. Over two million cases of donuts from FGF LLC were recalled in the US and Canada over fears of a listeria contamination in January. The FDA also gave a ‘Class I’ recall to broccoli sold at Walmart that potentially had the bacteria in February.

Although no injuries or deaths were reported from these recalls, the CDC confirmed at least 12 people died after drinking frozen shakes that were recalled later that month. Like the other products, the Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial-branded shakes were recalled due to Listeria contamination.
