Karen Bass (pictured), the democratic mayor of Los Angeles, was blasted online as a 'racist' after describing the unprecedented numbers of Latinos joining the Border Patrol as 'sad'. The mayor expressed her disappointment in an interview on Friday with Wolf Blitzer on 'The Situation Room,' which sparked outrage online, with many calling her 'racist' and a 'hypocrite' for being 'disappointed in diversity.' The mayor was asked her thoughts about an inside report at a border patrol academy showing the record-breaking number of recruits joining US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), with many being Latino.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass sparked controversy following her comments about the rising number of Latino recruits joining the U.S. Border Patrol. During an interview on CNN’s “The Situation Room” with Wolf Blitzer, Bass expressed her reservations, calling the trend “sad.” Her remarks quickly drew criticism online, with some labeling her as “racist” and a “hypocrite” for seemingly opposing diversity.

'Well, in a way, I think it's sad,' Bass replied. 'I think that those Border Patrol agents are going to have a difficult time when they're out in the field, and they see what actually happens in real life separate from their training.' Bass believes Latinos' primary incentive is financial, and added that it speaks to the economic situation that millions of Americans are struggling with. However, the report she had just watched showed multiple Latinos describing their motivations that had nothing to do with money. During the investigation in the facility, CNN correspondent David Culver interviewed two Latino border patrol agents about why they joined the agency and the criticism they face from other Latinos.

When asked about a report highlighting the unprecedented influx of Latino recruits at a Border Patrol academy, Bass expressed concern. “Well, in a way, I think it’s sad,” she said. “I believe those Border Patrol agents will face challenges once they encounter real-life situations beyond their training.” Bass suggested that financial need might be driving Latinos to join, reflecting broader economic struggles across America. However, the report featured several recruits citing reasons unrelated to financial gain.

Border Patrol Agent Claudio Herrera proudly told Culver why he joined: 'I'm protecting my community. I'm protecting both sides of the border.' It took Claudio 11 years to become a citizen, and he advised immigrants to follow the legal process, or they will only 'find jail or only find death.' Juan Peralta, 20, and the son of an immigrant, also told the outlet that many are surprised that he is joining the agency so young and asked him how he feels about 'arresting your own kind.' Peralta explained, 'They didn't come in the right way. So, they aren't my kind.'

In the investigation, CNN correspondent David Culver interviewed Latino agents who shared their motivations for joining the agency. Border Patrol Agent Claudio Herrera explained his decision, saying, “I’m protecting my community. I’m protecting both sides of the border.” Having spent 11 years to become a citizen, Herrera urged immigrants to follow legal pathways to avoid dire consequences. Similarly, Juan Peralta, a 20-year-old son of an immigrant, addressed skepticism about his career choice. When asked about arresting fellow Latinos, he stated, “They didn’t come in the right way. So, they aren’t my kind.”

Over half of the agents serving on the southern border are Hispanic, and applications are higher than 70 percent from one year ago, according to the CBP. The findings left the mayor disappointed as she added: 'I definitely am concerned about that report.' The mayor's criticism was not well received by droves of social media users, who took to several platforms to express their outrage at her reaction. One person said: 'Karen Bass idiot mayor who lied about everything concerning the FIRES is now upset at DIVERSITY?' Another wrote: 'Karen Bass is a hypocrite and racist.'

A third added: 'I've known Hispanics whose families waited and immigrated legally. They're against illegal immigration. Karen Bass really is detached from reality.' New Border Patrol Agents are eligible for up to $60,000 in incentives, according to the CBP. New agents receive $10,000 after completing the academy and an additional $10,000 if assigned to a remote location. 'CBP is committed to recruiting and retaining top talent for our critical mission,' said CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott. 'By offering competitive incentives, we are investing in skilled professionals who will help secure America's borders and advance national security.'
