Katy Perry’s surprising relationship with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has the potential to stir up some awkward dynamics within their shared circle of friends, which includes Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.

Prince Harry, 41, and Meghan Markle, 44, formed a friendship with Orlando Bloom, 48, and his high-profile partner, Katy Perry, after relocating to the celebrity hotspot of Montecito. Last year, they even attended Katy’s concert in Las Vegas, showcasing their close bonds.

While under different circumstances, the Duchess of Sussex might be thrilled for her friend Katy moving forward with a new romance, the situation is complicated by the fact that Trudeau’s ex-wife, Sophie, is a “dear friend” of Meghan.

Additionally, Prince Harry has crossed paths with Justin Trudeau on several occasions, including at the Invictus Games in both 2017 and 2025. Trudeau was also among those who extended a warm welcome to Harry and Meghan when they moved to Canada after stepping back from royal duties in 2020.

Trudeau expressed his support on Twitter, stating that Harry, Meghan, and their then eight-month-old son, Archie, “were among friends and always welcome here.”

This past Saturday night, Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau were seen walking hand-in-hand into Katy’s birthday celebration at Crazy Horse in Paris, France. This public appearance officially confirmed their relationship, which first sparked dating rumors back in July.

Trudeau, who was prime minister of Canada from 2015 to March 2025, announced his separation from Sophie, whom he shares three children with, in 2023 after 18 years of marriage. 

Katy and Orlando, meanwhile, confirmed their breakup in July this year following mounting speculation about their relationship status. They began dating in 2016 before becoming engaged on Valentine’s Day 2019.

While Harry has known Trudeau for several years in a work capacity, Meghan claimed his ex-wife Sophie was a ‘dear friend’ of hers. 

The former Suits actress has suggested she was very close with the former First Lady of Canada, describing Sophie as being ’emblematic of strength’.

Speaking during her Archetypes podcast in November 2022, Meghan said her pal ‘used to send me little meditations during my pregnancy’ and voice notes ‘of encouragement’, adding: ‘I’ve gone to her over the years for advice.’ 

She also revealed that the two had spent a day together at the Montecito mansion she shares with Prince Harry.

Meghan described the day as being one full of laughter and fun, with their children playing in the swimming pool on pizza-shaped floats while they drank wine ‘on the terrace’ and were ‘giddy like absolute schoolgirls.’ 

According to the biography Finding Freedom, Meghan and Sophie became friendly in 2016, after the former Suits actor met Justin in 2015, at the One Young World summit in Ottawa that year.

That year, Sophie and Meghan were pictured posing cheek-to-cheek in a photobooth at the Canadian Arts & Fashion Awards (CAFA) at the exclusive Soho House. 

According to Finding Freedom authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand: ‘Sophie had given up a career in television, where she had been working as a correspondent on CTV’s eTalk, to take on a more formal role alongside her husband as he hit the campaign trail.

‘The pair became fast email friends, Meghan was interested to hear how Sophie had successfully made the move from an entertainment news correspondent to much-beloved First Lady, all while skillfully dodging controversy.’

In November 2022, Meghan invited Sophie on to her Spotify podcast Archetypes, to speak on an episode titled Good Wife/Bad Wife, Good Mom/Bad Mom.

During the episode, the pair spoke about the challenges of parenting and being a partner to two famous men, and Meghan revealed she threw a pool party that summer for Sophie, in which the two ‘giggled like schoolgirls’ and drank wine on the terrace of her Montecito mansion. 

Meghan introduced Sophie as a ‘humanitarian mother’ she met in Toronto, where she was living while filming Suits, at the city’s fashion week seven years ago.

She said: ‘Sophie has become a dear friend and someone who I think is so emblematic of strength that comes from embracing your humanity, even in the face of all these family and home and public pressures, keeping that sense of self while holding up the mantle of what comes with being a parent and a spouse, that’s a full plate.’

Meghan went on to describe a day that she spent at her Montecito mansion with Sophie. She said: ‘This wasn’t our day of being the wives and moms, all perfectly quaffed with up-dos and pearls and demure smiles.

‘This was the other version of us both with wild curly hair and swimsuits and loose linen and huge belly laughs. Big cuddles with our little ones, quiet whispers of girl talk on the terrace, giddy like absolute schoolgirls. We were just having so much fun.’

However, according to Sophie, the friendship may have cooled somewhat, with the ex-wife of Trudeau telling the Times last year: ‘I know her… but we haven’t spent much time together.’

It is unclear why Sophie played down her friendship with Meghan, though it has been speculated that it could be linked to the breakdown of the Duchess’ friendship with former best friend Jessica Mulroney – who has also previously acted as a stylist for Sophie. 

The Duchess once said that ‘the room stops’ whenever Jessica ‘shows up’ but reportedly cut off contact when the Canadian stylist became embroiled in an online race row related to Black Lives Matter.

Afterwards TV work dried up and she even stepped down from the charity she set up to support homeless women across Canada, the US and the UK. Meghan, it is said, cut off contact with her at the same time.

Meanwhile, Katy and Orlando became close with Meghan and Harry after they moved into the same Californian neighbourhood as them.

Prior to becoming neighbours, Katy – who performed for the King at the Coronation concert in 2023 after attending the crowning on the monarch in London – made headlines around the world in 2018 after making critical remarks about the Duchess’ Givenchy wedding dress. 

When asked about her opinion on Meghan’s minimalistic gown, Katy advised: ‘I would have done one more fitting!’ before giving the Entertainment Tonight camera a mischievous wink. 

But it’s clear all was forgiven between the popstar and the former actress, with Katy and Orlando reportedly among the guests invited to the third birthday party for the Duke and Duchess’ daughter Princess Lilibet at their £20m mansion.

Their friendship was further highlighted in 2023, when Harry and Meghan attended the ‘Fireworks’ concert in Las Vegas sitting in VIP seats alongside Celine Dion.

Then, in February, Harry secured the talents of his neighbour to sing at the opening ceremony of the Invictus Games in Vancouver, Canada. 

The singer is by far the biggest star to appear at the international multi-sport event for wounded, injured, and sick military service personnel, both serving and veterans, founded by the Prince in 2014.

Both Katy and Trudeau made appearances at the sporting event, with the former opening the games, and the latter making a speech at the closing ceremony.

They also both stepped out at King Charles coronation two years ago. It’s unclear when the couple first met.
