A tourist visiting Wisconsin for a golf getaway was killed by a DoorDash driver who retaliated after being called ‘stupid’ and receiving ‘the finger,’ as reported by the police.

Giovanni ‘Mike’ Robinson, a 32-year-old new dad from Ontario, Canada, tragically lost his life in an apparently random drive-by shooting while making his way back to his hotel in Sheboygan Falls just after midnight on Wednesday, as detailed by WOWT 6 News.

He had earlier been pictured celebrating his first-ever hole-in-one.

On Friday, police arrested 35-year-old Luis Cruz Burgos in connection with the shooting, charging him with first-degree reckless homicide. 

A criminal complaint accessed by the news outlet uncovered a startling reason for the unprovoked attack – the conflict, which turned deadly, allegedly stemmed from something as trivial as a transportation request.

Robinson and three companions celebrated a golf event at a local tavern that Wednesday before they attempted to order an Uber for their return trip to Sheboygan Falls, as indicated by the documents.

The group tried to hail another Uber back to their hotel after getting out of the car, but ran into trouble finding a ride. 

The complaint states that a Hispanic DoorDash driver, who had just finished a delivery, encountered the group. The men offered him cash in a desperate attempt to get a ride back.

However, according to witness accounts found in documents procured by CBC News, the group ultimately declined the ride and began to walk away after the driver demanded $40, which exceeded what they were willing to spend.

As Robinson and his brother-in-law walked away, witnesses reported the same car speeding past them, followed by a sudden blast that sounded like firecrackers, according to the court documents. 

Witnesses said the last sound they heard was Robinson’s scream before he collapsed to the ground, all while the car sped away. 

One of Robinson’s friends told investigators that just minutes after the loud gunshots, he heard Robinson crying out, ‘I’m dying,’ according to WISN News. 

The same friend also said that the conversation was not hostile but a normal interaction that ended when a friend suggested walking home, citing the price as unreasonable for a short ride.

The autopsy confirmed that Robinson was shot squarely in the chest, causing his death at the scene, according to WOWT.

Authorities obtained surveillance footage from a nearby business showing Robinson’s group speaking with someone in a black SUV for several minutes.

The complaint noted that investigators then observed the three men walking away, visibly upset as they complained among themselves about the driver’s fare demands. 

In a written statement to police, another witness claimed the man rolled down the passenger-side window before fatally shooting Robinson, as reported by CBC.

Police immediately launched a search for what was described as a small, dark-colored SUV, which was later located by a sheriff’s deputy. 

The vehicle was found to be registered to 35-year-old Cruz Burgos, with additional footage showing a car matching his speeding near the scene on the night of the shooting, according to the complaint.

During questioning, Cruz Burgos – who said he had been driving for DoorDash for nine months – claimed the group flagged him down for a ride.

Though he admitted encountering the golfers, Cruz Burgos told police, according to the complaint, that they had not discussed any ride negotiations.

He then alleged that individuals in the group called him ‘stupid’ and ‘flipped him off’ as he drove away. 

Cruz Burgos allegedly made a U-turn after hearing their comments, though he claimed he didn’t see anyone fire a gun and that everyone appeared fine upon second look.

He also informed law enforcement that due to a 2019 domestic incident in Florida, he is prohibited from possessing a firearm and therefore does not own one. 

The Sheboygan Falls Police Department said that when officers responded to reports of Robinson being shot, they arrived to find him ‘suffering a fatal injury.’

‘Despite life-saving measures being initiated and immediate medical attention rendered, the victim succumbed to their injury (and) was pronounced deceased at the scene,’ the department said.

On Monday, just six days after the heinous murder, Cruz Burgos made his first court appearance, where Sheboygan County District Attorney Joel Urmanski condemned the shooting as an ‘extremely violent, senseless act,’ WISN reported.

Court Commissioner Ryan O’Rourke set Cruz Burgos’s bail at $2 million – the same amount requested by prosecutors.

‘Given the level of charge and the potential penalty the defendant is facing, as well as the violent nature of the allegation, the bond requested by the state is within the norm of what is reasonable,’ O’Rourke said, according to the outlet.

The 32-year-old Canadian had been living in Pennsylvania with his American wife and had recently become a father, welcoming a baby girl just six weeks before his death, according to National Post.

He had been working for a golf company and, on the day he died, hit his first-ever hole-in-one at Whistling Straits Golf Course – a moment captured in a photo showing him smiling proudly as he held up the ball. 

Jess Robinson, his sister-in-law, described last week’s incident as nothing short of a ‘nightmare.’

Robinson’s cousins launched a GoFundMe page in his memory, recalling how he once played a season of professional hockey with the Hannover Scorpions in Germany’s Oberliga. 

‘He was the proudest when she arrived, showing her off with the biggest smile you could ever imagine,’ cousins Amanda and Daniella Apostolakos wrote.

‘He dove right into his new role of “Dad” and was a natural, just like we all knew he would be,’ they added. 

‘It is the most heartbreaking to know he will never be able to hold his baby girl again.’

As of Tuesday afternoon, the fundraiser had raised $248,420 CAD ($178,469.15 USD) toward its $260,000 goal. 

If convicted, Cruz Burgos faces a mandatory life sentence under Wisconsin law.
