A nationwide recall of coolers sold at major US retailers including Costco, Target, and Dick’s Sporting Goods has been expanded – after even more people lost their fingertips. Another 130,000 more Igloo coolers have been added to the one million recalled in February.

Since then, reports of fingertip injuries have risen and now total 78. This includes 26 that resulted in fingertip amputations, bone fractures or lacerations, according to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recall affects Igloo’s 90-quart Flip & Tow Rolling Coolers, which were sold between January 2019 and January 2025. The cooler’s telescoping tow handle can create a hazardous pinch point when pushed against the cooler’s body.

The recalled coolers span several Igloo product lines, including the Latitude, MaxCold, and EcoCool series. Affected models were manufactured prior to January 2024 and sold for between $80 and $140. ‘Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled coolers and contact Igloo for a free replacement handle,’ reads the latest recall notice.

Customers have left positive evaluations on the cooler’s product review pages. In 102 reviews on Igloo’s website, the EcoCool Latitude 90-Qt Roller Cooler received 4.2 out of five stars. But several customers did have complaints about the handles. ‘This cooler succeeds in keeping things cold but the body design and quality of the plastic are poor,’ one customer wrote in their two-star review.

‘The handle to pull the cooler so you can roll it hits against thin plastic where it attaches to the cooler.’ Customers in Mexico and Canada should also contact the company for a free replacement part, the recall stated. An additional 20,000 in Canada and 5,900 in Mexico have been recalled in the latest notice. That is on top of 47,000 and 23,000 in February’s initial recall. To find out if their coolers are impacted by the recall, customers can check the SKU etched into the bottom of the cooler.

A complete list of impacted SKUs is included in CPSC’s recall notices. The February one is here, and May’s ons is here. ‘With consumer safety as our top priority, we have voluntarily issued a recall on the 90QT Flip & Tow Rolling Cooler and have provided consumers with a proper course of action that includes a free replacement handle,’ a spokesperson for Igloo told Daily Mail in February. ‘Through rigorous testing and proactive steps, we are constantly improving our products to meet the highest safety standards.’
Important recalls

Several other retailers have issued recalls this year. Earlier this week, Publix issued a recall on baby food over fears of potential lead contamination Another recall also warned customers of potential unintended finger removals . Frontgate, a luxury brand of outdoor furniture, issued a recall for 70,000 Newport aluminum and teak chaise lounge chairs in June 2024. After hospital visits, two people had their fingers partially amputated.
