Former American soccer star Carli Lloyd has once again launched an attack on the USWNT, claiming the rest of the world no longer fears them.

The retired-midfielder-turned-analyst made no secret of her criticism of the USA following its shock World Cup exit in the last 16 against Sweden last summer and she has continued to hit out at the squad following its disappointment.

Six months on from the USA’s blow Down Under, Lloyd continued her autopsy of its failure to clinch a three-peat, insisting the squad had begun to unravel long before the World Cup.

She rounded off her blast with the hashtag ‘#NoOneFearsTheUswntanymore’.

After winning Gold at the 2008 and 2012 games, the USWNT was knocked out in the quarter-finals by Sweden in Rio and only managed to claim a Bronze medal in Tokyo.

Lloyd, who has transitioned into a broadcasting role after retiring in 2021 following 316 caps for the Star and Stripes, scoring 134 goals from 2005, repeatedly took aim at the USWNT’s sense of entitlement throughout last year’s tournament and in the wake of the USA’s exit.

A two-time World Cup winner herself, Lloyd particularly took issue with players arriving in sunglasses and dancing on the field before kickoff.

‘If I saw that, if I was a part of that team, I would raise hell and I would go directly to the players and tell them to take their sunglasses off and stop dancing,’ she said on CBS’s ‘Kickin’ It’ back in October.

Lloyd’s comments appeared to reference USA star Megan Rapinoe, who played her last World Cup in summer and retired from soccer last month with her USWNT career coming to an end against South Africa in Chicago.

Rapinoe, who missed a crucial penalty in the USA’s shootout defeat to Sweden, was frequently pictured wearing sunglasses ahead of games at the tournament in Australia and New Zealand.

The veteran was also seen heading to her final USWNT match with bright reflective sunglasses and a speaker playing her pregame music of choice.

Lloyd claimed those instances suggested some players were ‘taking every moment for granted’ and also questioned their toughness.

‘It has to be hard,’ she added about playing for the national team. ‘I think all these players want to come in, want to feel comfortable, want to express themselves. It doesn’t work like that. Just do your job, come in, put the work in.’

The USWNT recently suffered another shock, failing to seal top spot in their group at the CONCACAF W Gold Cup following a 2-0 defeat to Mexico.

The USA is competing at the tournament with Twila Kilgore at the helm after Vlatko Andonovski resigned in the wake of their World Cup exit.

However, Chelsea’s current manager Emma Hayes is set to step in following the end of the WSL season.
