Judge orders Walton Academy to close immediately

In a decisive move, a judge in Hillsborough County, Florida, has mandated the closure of Walton Academy Charter School. This decision follows an emergency hearing where attorneys representing the school highlighted severe safety concerns, emphasizing the need for urgent intervention to protect students.

The Hillsborough County School Board convened earlier in the week, where they voted to revoke the school’s charter. The board’s decision was driven by persistent safety issues that have plagued the institution, raising alarms about the well-being of its students.

During Friday afternoon’s court proceedings, presided over by Judge Helene Daniel, evidence was presented from both the school district and Walton Academy’s legal counsel. A critical testimony came from the school system’s head of security, who painted a grim picture of the situation.

Chief John Newman, the security chief, testified that the school’s safety problems were not new but rather longstanding. “There hasn’t been an audit yet where there hasn’t been a safety deficiency,” he explained, underscoring the severity of the issues at hand.

The head of security for the school system told the court the security issues at the school have been going on for a long time.

“There hasn’t been an audit yet where there hasn’t been a safety deficiency,” said Chief John Newman.

However, the Principal of the school told the court, all of the safety issues have now been fixed.

“Everything we had on campus was operating,” said Tanika Walton, Principal of Walton Academy.
However, after listening to all of the evidence, Judge Daniel ruled the school must immediately close.

“I think the evidence suggests to this court that the students are not actually currently safe, that there is an ongoing threat to these children,” said Daniel.

The school has the right to appeal the decision and the decision by the school board to terminate its charter.
