Villegas-Gonzalez reportedly rammed his car into the arrest team, hitting an officer and dragging him a considerable distance while attempting to escape, according to NBC reports. Another agent, fearing for his life, fired a shot at the suspect in response.

Both the injured officer and Villegas-Gonzalez were taken to the hospital, where Villegas-Gonzalez was pronounced dead. The officer struck by the car suffered significant injuries but is reportedly stable.

The incident happened 15 miles west of Chicago, in Franklin Park. In a statement obtained by CNN, the Department of Homeland Security expressed hopes for the officer’s quick recovery.

The statement emphasized that the officer adhered to his training and used necessary force to safeguard both the public and law enforcement. It criticized social media content and activists that encourage resistance against law enforcement, stating that such actions spread misinformation and jeopardize public and officer safety, as well as those being apprehended.

A witness captured video footage after Villegas-Gonzalez collided with their trailer. The clip showed what seemed to be blood on the road, with agents tending to an individual on the nearby sidewalk.

Federal authorities, local authorities, and Cook County police arrived in the area. Police tape blocked off the site of the accident. A nearby high school and middle school were placed into ‘secure protocol’ because of the violent traffic stop. The schools informed parents that classroom learning would continue, but students may be prevented from leaving the schools until police resolve the situation.

Illinois governor JB Pritzker said in a statement: ‘I am aware of the troubling incident that has unfolded in Franklin Park. ‘This is a developing situation and the people of Illinois deserve a full, factual accounting of what’s happened today to ensure transparency and accountability.’ FBI officials have confirmed there was no threat to public safety.
