Her body has never been found and police believe it was chopped up and served as kebabs by takeout workers.

But nearly two decades after the tragedy, Charlene’s family has suffered further pain when her younger brother, Robert Downes, was found dead at the age of 30.

The father of four complained of feeling ill before falling asleep in an upstairs room at the family home on December 4.

His father returned home to find Robert unconscious, and paramedics sadly pronounced him dead, MailOnline reports.

Robert and Charlene’s devastated mother Karen says that she “will never be the same again.”

“Losing him and Charlene is too much. I know it’s been 18 years, but it’s not getting better. I’ll never be the same again,” the 56-year-old told the middle.

Murder

Despite a murder trial and a long and controversial investigation, the largest in Lancashire police history, his family is no closer to finding out how and why he died.

Two local takeout workers were tried for Charlene’s murder in May 2007, but were not convicted.

Speaking to Sun Online in 2019, Karen said: “There were reports that Charlene had been groomed and involved in the sex trade that broke my heart.

“My daughter wasn’t here to speak for herself, so it seemed like people could say whatever she wanted. But when I looked back, there were times when Charlene had skipped school and I didn’t know where she had been.

“Her One time she came home with £ 70 and we couldn’t get the truth out of her. We didn’t know where she was coming from. She also had cigarettes and we didn’t know who bought them for her. Now, everything fell into place for her.

“It was also suggested in court that after she was killed, her body had been cut up and mixed into kebabs. It was horrible to hear. As a mother she almost broke me.”
