A mother who was assured by her son that he was safe in a New South Wales prison recalls screaming and crying uncontrollably after discovering that his cellmate had murdered him.

Geoffrey Fardell had been locked inside a jail cell with a repeat offender who has a historical tendency toward unprovoked violence, the New South Wales Supreme Court was told Tuesday.

‘I’m fine here mom … don’t worry,’ Fardell previously told Sandra Deveson, who found this comforting and believed ‘he would be fine,’ she said.

Now he has recurring nightmares about him dying alone on the cold prison floor.

Richard Jason Reay, 46, was found guilty in a trial with only one judge for murdering his 52-year-old cellmate at the Mid North Coast Correctional Center near Kempsey.

He has pleaded not guilty to murder, but admitted manslaughter for the June 2019 murder.

However, Judge Robert Allan Hulme dismissed his account “completely unbelievable” saying that his version of events “made no sense.”

He often thinks of the “frightened terror he must have felt in the last moments of his life … that is now my ongoing nightmare.”

To his “horror and disbelief”, his son, who “loved life and people,” had been placed “in a cell with you,” he told Reay.

Reay was jailed in 2003 after striking a man with a baseball bat on the head for no apparent reason, and in 2019 alone he recorded seven incidents of assault against multiple inmates.

The next morning, he told a street sweeper that “my cell is dead.”

Judge Hulme dismissed his “totally implausible account of events.”

Initially, Reay said that he woke up to find Fardell dead in the morning, a story he maintained until the mark of the injury on his neck became apparent.

A registered nurse who oversees Fardell’s medical treatment said that his behavior prior to the incident was not worrisome and that he was “charming.”

The Crown stated that Reay had poor or bleak prospects for rehabilitation.

Judge Hulme will deliver his sentence on July 28.
