Leicestershire Police Deputy Director Julia Debenham admitted that it must have been “ extremely distressing ” and launched an investigation into what went wrong.
The force had been denounced for the murder of the 18-year-old, who has not yet been identified, at 11:45 pm on Wednesday night.
But nearly 24 hours later, on Thursday night, a group of family and friends had to clean the blood from their multiple street stabbings themselves.

ACC Debenham said: ‘I want to unreservedly apologize to the family and friends of this young man, along with other members of the community involved in cleaning the blood from the road and pavement last night. This must have been extremely distressing.

Police launched a murder investigation after they were called at 11:45 p.m. Wednesday following a report of a serious assault.
Officers attended and an 18-year-old man was found with multiple stab wounds.
Officers are still searching for who was responsible for the frenzied stabbing attack.
The East Midlands Ambulance Service was also present and the man was taken to hospital but died early Thursday morning.
Detectives are attractive to anyone who is in the area late at night or in the early hours or who has information to communicate with.
Detective Chief Inspector Joe Banfield of the East Midlands Special Operations Unit said: “We have a dedicated team that conducts comprehensive investigations including speaking to witnesses, analyzing CCTV and conducting forensic investigations. A scene remains at the scene while these investigations continue.
“We understand that there were several people in the area at the time of the incident and we are appealing to anyone who was in the area and who has contact information.
“Please remember: were you in the Melbourne Street, Maidstone Road, Garendon Street, Maynard Road or Kent Street area? Did you see or hear anything that worried you? Do you have any CCTV or dash cam footage from the area that can help our investigation? If so, please contact us.
“We understand that the incident will have caused concern in the area and our officers remain in the area talking to people and offering reassurance.”
