Who is Nicholas Calisi ?
Alleged members of the Genovese Organized Crime Family of Westchester and Fairfield counties face racketeering charges for their roles within the organization.
Federal prosecutors announced that four family members and two associates have been charged with racketeering racketeering involving illegal gambling and racketeering.
The defendants in Manhattan federal court:
Michael Messina, 69, of New Fairfield, Conn.;
Ralph Balsamo, 51, of Tuckahoe, NY;
Michael Poli, 37, of Hawthorne, NY;
Nicholas Calisi, 63, of Boca Raton, Fla.;
John Campanella, 47, of the Bronx;
Thomas Poli, 64, from the Bronx.
According to the indictment, Calisi and Balsamo are alleged captains of the Family, Messina and Campanella are alleged soldiers, and both Polis are alleged associates of the Genovese Crime Family.
Federal prosecutor Damian Williams said that “a captain is responsible for overseeing the criminal activities of his crew, resolving disputes between members of the Family, resolving disputes between members of the Family and members of other Families and other criminal organizations, and providing soldiers and associated with support and protection.
“In return, the captain typically receives a portion of the illegal earnings from each of his crew’s soldiers and associates.”
All six are alleged to have engaged in or agreed to engage others in certain crimes, including granting exorbitant credit extensions, financing exorbitant credit extensions, extorting extortion of credit extensions, racketeering, operating gaming businesses illegal gambling and the transmission of gambling information. .
“For years, members of the Genovese crime family have terrorized New York communities with violence and illegal business,” said New York Attorney General Letitia James.
“These people allegedly made their money through illegal gambling and loan sharking, saddled victims with incredible debt they can’t pay.”
Each suspect faces up to 20 years in prison if he is convicted of the racketeering charges.
