Phynjuar Saunders Thomas is the wife of Dennis Thomas, Thomas was the alto sax, flutist and percussionist. He served as the emcee at the band’s shows and his last appearance with the group was on July 4 at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. Born on February 9, 1951, in Orlando, Florida, Thomas was known for his foreword to the band’s 1971 hit Who’s Gonna Take the Weight.

The other founders of the group are the brothers Ronald and Robert Bell, and Spike Mickens, Ricky Westfield, George Brown, and Charles Smith. In a lengthy Instagram post, Kool & the Gang’s Instagram posted a photo of Thomas and wrote: “On August 7, 2021, Dennis Thomas (known as ‘Dee Tee’), beloved husband, father, and co-founder of Kool & the Gang , passed away peacefully in his sleep in New Jersey at the age of 70. Dennis was born on February 9, 1951 in Orlando, Florida. He was married to Phynjuar Saunders Thomas and resided for a long time in Montclair, New Jersey.

Dennis, an original member of Kool & the Gang, was known as the quintessential cool cat of the group, loved for his trendy clothes and hats and his laid-back demeanor. Dennis, a great personality and an extremely reserved person, was an alto saxophonist, flutist, percussionist and master of ceremonies in the band shows. Dennis’s foreword to the 1971 group hit “Who’s Gonna Take the Weight” is legendary and an example of his showmanship.

Dee Tee was the group’s wardrobe stylist and made sure they were always fresh. In the band’s early days, Dennis also served as the “budget hawk,” carrying the group’s earnings in a paper bag on the hood of his horn. Nicknamed “America’s Opening” by CNN, Kool & the Gang kicked off the 2021 season of the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on July 4. Sadly, this was Dennis’s farewell appearance with the band. “
