Rodney James Alcala was an American serial killer and rapist who was sentenced to death in California for five murders committed in that state between 1977 and 1979, and received an additional sentence of 25 years to life after pleading guilty to two homicides committed in New York in 1971 and 1977. Wikipedia

A man sentenced to death in the US state of California for murdering a 12-year-old girl and four other women died of natural causes, authorities said.

Rodney Alcala died in a hospital near Corcoran State Prison in California in the early hours of Saturday.

Alcala, who was known as the “Dating Game Killer” after participating in a US television show, was convicted in 2010.

In addition to the California murders, he had also pleaded guilty to the murders of two other women in New York.

Alcala was first sentenced to death in Orange County in 1980 for the kidnapping and murder of 12-year-old Robin Samsoe in Los Angeles the previous year.

He died of natural causes at a hospital in San Joaquin Valley, California, prison officials said in a statement.

However, his sentence was overturned by the California Supreme Court and he was granted a new trial.

She later received the same sentence at the second trial, but this was again overturned in 2003.

In the years that followed, investigators uncovered forensic evidence linking Alcala to the other California murders.

At the 2010 trial, he was found guilty of killing Samsoe and four other women between the ages of 18 and 32 in the years from 1977 to 1979.

In September 1978, Alcala participated in The Dating Game, an American television program in which a single woman interrogated three single men hidden from her sight before selecting one based on her responses.

Alcala was selected at the end of the show, but the woman later said that she decided not to date him after a backstage conversation with him, describing him as “creepy.”

In 2012, Alcala was extradited to New York after being charged with two additional murders in 1971 and 1977. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced in New York to 25 years to life in prison.

California state prison officials said in a statement Saturday that Alcala was suspected of being involved in several additional murders.

No further details were given about his death.

There are currently about 700 inmates on death row in California, but Governor Gavin Newsom has ordered a moratorium on executions.
