Sarah Steck Hyatt is the fifth unfortunate victim of a recent Denver gun spree that claimed the lives of many people on Tuesday.

She died after a shooter eluded arrest many times and went on a violent, targeted spree across the Denver metro region on Tuesday, according to investigators.

Sarah, who was 28 years old, died on Tuesday at a nearby hospital. At a press conference, Lakewood police spokesman John Romero said Steck worked as a clerk at the Hyatt House, a hotel in suburban Denver.

According to Romero, the Lakewood police officer who fatally shot the shooter after he injured her with gunshots was in stable condition in a hospital.

Lyndon James McLeod, 47, was named as the suspect by authorities on Tuesday.

Investigators found that the suspect was “targeting certain persons” after a preliminary investigation, according to Denver Police Cmdr. Matt Clark.

Although Clark speculated that McLeod may have had “some issues” with the motel, it was unclear why he shot Steck.

Andra Alvarez, the hotel’s general manager, didn’t indicate what McLeod’s link to the Hyatt House may be in a written statement. The hotel is shutting down to enable employees to grieve, she added.

“Sarah’s contagious laugh, her love of cats, art, and music especially Blink-182  was known to colleagues and guests,” Alvarez added. “Sarah adored her boyfriend, family, and friends beyond anything else. She will be sorely missed.”

McLeod was “on the radar” of law enforcement, according to Denver Police Chief Paul Pazen, who claimed he had been probed twice, first in mid-2020 and again this year.

Neither probe resulted in the state or criminal charges, and Pazen would say more about the inquiries or what led to them.

Pazen went on to say that the motivation for what he described as a “violent crime spree” was yet unknown.

Two women were fatally shot and a man was injured in a business in downtown Denver just after 5 p.m. Monday, according to Clark. The victims have yet to be recognized by authorities. The establishment was the Sol Tribe tattoo shop, according to Denver’s NBC station KUSA.

McLeod then stormed into a nearby house and business, according to Clark, and opened fire on inhabitants, but no one was hurt. McLeod fatally shot a guy inside a residence a few miles distant after torching a van in an alley behind the building, according to Clark.

The man’s identity has not been revealed.

According to Clark, a police chase and firefight ensued with McLeod, who was driving a black Ford Econoline van. McLeod “damaged” the cops’ car and escaped west of Denver on Interstate 25 toward Lakewood.

McLeod opened fire inside the Lucky 13 tattoo business in Lakewood shortly before 6 p.m. According to Romero, Danny Scofield, 38, was fatally shot.

“You were my Brother, an incredible human being, a fantastic Father, Son, and Brother,” wrote a Facebook post on the shop’s page on Tuesday, adding that Scofield — also known as Dano Blair  and others were “senselessly slain.”
