Who was Charlie Watts?

Drummer Charlie Watts, who died at age 80, laid the foundation for the music of the Rolling Stones.

The band became synonymous with rock and roll excess, but for Watts, playing with the Stones didn’t become the ego trip that fueled Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.

A jazz fan, Watts competed with Bill Wyman for the title of least charismatic member of the band; he avoided the limelight and rarely gave interviews

And he described life with the Stones as five years playing, 20 years hanging around.

He was 80 year old August 24, 2021.


Charles Robert Watts was born on June 2, 1941 at London’s University College Hospital and raised in Kingsbury, now part of the London Borough of Brent.

He came from a working-class background. His father was a truck driver, and Watts grew up in a manufactured home the family had moved into after German bombs destroyed hundreds of homes in the area.

A childhood friend once described how Watts had an early interest in jazz and recalled hearing 78 in Charlie’s bedroom from artists like Jelly Roll Morton and Charlie Parker.


At school he developed an interest and talent for art and went on to study at Harrow Art School before finding a job as a graphic designer at a local advertising agency.

But his love of music remained the dominant force in his life. His parents bought him a drum set when he was 13 and he played his jazz record collection.

He began playing drums in local clubs and pubs and, in 1961, Alexis Korner listened to him and offered him a job in his band, Blues Incorporated, a group that became a vital part of the development of British rock music. .

Also playing with Blues Incorporated was a guitarist named Brian Jones who introduced Watts to the Rolling Stones, whose original drummer, Tony Chapman, had left the band.

On October 14, 1964, Watts married Shirley Ann Shepherd (born September 11, 1938), whom he had met before the band was successful. The couple have a daughter, Seraphina, born in March 1968, who in turn has given birth to Watts’ only grandson, a girl named Charlotte.
