On Sunday, January 9, 2022, Hickman’s publicist Harlan Boll announced that the actor passed away at his Los Angeles home from complications with Parkinson’s disease.

Parkinson’s disease is a nervous system disorder with symptoms that gradually affect body movement over time.

Damage to nerve cells in the brain results in dropping dopamine levels, eventually leading to the initial symptoms of Parkinson’s, often a tremor in one hand.

More symptoms include slowing of body movement, stiffness, and loss of balance.

While medications can help control Parkinson’s disease, there is no cure.

Typically, people only live 10 to 20 years after a Parkinson’s diagnosis.

The television actor was best known for his lead role in “The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis,” a teen sitcom that aired from 1959 to 1963 on CBS. Coincidentally, the date of Hickman’s death, January 9, is the birthday of his friend, co-star of the show, Bob Denver, who died in 2005 at age 70.

Before becoming the “poster boy of the baby boomer generation” as high school playboy Dobie Gillis, Hickman previously starred in “The Bob Cummings Show” between 1955 and 1959, his television role in which he played the nephew of Cummings, Chuck.

Career

Hickman started out as an extra at age 6, with a small role in director John Ford’s Oscar-winning film adaptation of “The Grapes of Wrath,” starring Henry Fonda and Jane Darwell. He also went on to act in small roles in “The Boy With Green Hair” and “The Lone Ranger” before landing a role alongside comedy legend Cummings.

Moving on from Dobie, Hickman would earn a BA in economics from Loyola Marymount University before returning to Hollywood. He later began playing other teenage roles, such as opposite Jane Fonda and Lee Marvin in “Cat Ballou.”In the 1970s, Hickman donned his producer hat as a CBS executive and helped bring many now-beloved shows to life, including “Maude,” “MAS * H” and “Designing Women.” He would return to fill the directorial position on “Designing Women,” as well as on “Head of the Class” and “Sister, Sister.”

After two previous marriages, to actress Carol Christensen and singer Joanne Papile, Hickman spent nearly 30 years with “Designing Women” star Joan Roberts from 1983 until her death in 2012.

When he was not acting or producing television, Dwayne Hickman loved oil painting and displayed his work in galleries across the country.

Hickman is survived by him and Roberts’ son, Albert Hickman, as well as the eldest son, John Hickman, whom he shared with the late Christensen.

His family has asked that all donations in his memory be sent to the Actors Fund and Dream Club United, a humanitarian organization founded by Albert Hickman.
