Gita Gopinath (born 8 December 1971) has been the Chief Economist of the International Monetary Fund since 2019. In that role, she is the Director of IMF’s Research Department and the Economic Counsellor of the Fund.

The International Monetary Fund on Thursday appointed its Indian-American Chief Economist Gita Gopinath as its first deputy managing director, the second-highest position at the global economic body.

Gopinath will take over from Geoffrey Okamoto on January 21, 2022.

The economist holds United States citizenship and is an Overseas Citizen of India. She was appointed as the chief economist of the International Monetary Fund in October 2018.

She was the first woman chief economist in the history of the global economic body.

Gopinath received her PhD in economics from Princeton University in 2001 after earning her bachelor’s degree from the University of Delhi. She earned a master’s degree from the Delhi School of Economics and the University of Washington.

The economist joined the University of Chicago in 2001 before moving to Harvard University in 2005.

“I believe that Gita – universally recognized as one of the world’s leading macroeconomists – has precisely the expertise that we need for the FDMD [first deputy managing director] role at this point,” International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said in a release issued late on Thursday.

Gita Gopinath was born on 8 December 1971 in Kolkata, West Bengal, her parents were from Kannur Kerala. When Geeta was just 9 years old, her family shifted to Mysuru, Kerala.

Gita’s parents have two daughters, in which she was the younger daughter. After the family shifted to Mysuru, she did her schooling there in Mysuru, after which she completed her graduation in Delhi. Gita moved to America to pursue further masters.

Where she took admission to Washington University in M.A. Economics again. After M.A. she takes admission to Princeton University for PhD on the advice of her mentor. After the completion of the PhD, she wants to come to India for her husband, who lives in India, but due to some reason, she can not come to India.

Gita Gopinath did a lot of research and her research was mainly on international finance and macroeconomics, published by several top economic journals.

She wrote research articles on serious issues such as exchange rates, trade and investment, international financial crisis, monetary policy, debt, and emerging market crisis.

Gita has also been a co-editor of the International Economic Current Handbook, has also served as a co-editor of the American Economy, and has been the Managing Director of Economic Studies. Gita Gopinath was the Economic Advisor to the Chief Minister of the state of Kerala in India till 2016-18.

She joined the Indian Finance Ministry as a member of the Eminent Person Advisory Group on G20 Matters. In October 2018, Gita was elected as the Chief Economist of the IMF. She was the second Indian and the first Indian woman to be elected as the Chief Economist for the IMF.

Before him, former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan has also been elected Chief Economist of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). In 2019, Gita was included in the world’s one of the Top Global Thinkers by Foreign Policy and the name of Gita was also included in the world’s top 25 economists.

Gita Gopinath Career

From 2001 to 2005, Gita Gopinath was an assistant professor at the University of Chicago.

In the year 2005, Gita Gopinath was appointed as an Assistant Professor at Harvard University.

In 2010, she was appointed to the position of Professor at Harvard University.

After this, she was appointed to the post of Professor of International Studies and Economics in the year 2015.

On 21 July 2016, she was appointed as the Financial Adviser to the Chief Minister of Kerala.

In the year 2018, she was appointed as the Chief Economist of the IMF International Monetary Fund.

Gita Gopinath is the second Indian to be appointed to the post of IMF. Prior to this, Raghuram Rajan has also been the Chief Economist of IFM.

Gopinath’s husband, Iqbal Singh Dhaliwal, is the Global Executive Director at Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab at the Department of Economics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

He began his career in public service as a member of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), which he left later. He was the first rank holder of UPSC civil service in 1995. His first posting was as Sub-collector in Tirunelveli District. They have a son named Rohil.
