A Washington DC woman found stabbed to death in her apartment had been awaiting trial for tossing the remains of her infant in the trash in bid to cover up his death.

LaDonia Boggs was found fatally stabbed in the doorway of her residence in northeast D.C. on Wednesday around 3 a.m., according to a press release from the Metropolitan Police Department. Officers from the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Carl Jones later the same day and charged him with second degree murder in connection with her death.

Detectives said the crime was “domestic in nature.”

Jones is the father of Boggs’ missing child, the Metropolitan Police Department confirmed to PEOPLE.

The newborn, Kyon Jones, was initially reported missing in May 2021, triggering a widespread search that also claimed headlines nationwide.

One week after the infant’s disappearance, Boggs told authorities she mistakenly rolled on top of the Kyon while she was under the influence of angel dust.

“He was ‘sleep on my chest and when I woke up, he wasn’t breathing anymore, because he was just that small. He was only 2 months old. He was a premature baby,” Boggs said in a video obtained by WRC-TV.

“I came back in the house and got a blanket and his car seat, and wrapped it up and took it outside and just throwed it in the trash.”

Authorities combed through a Virginia landfill for the newborn, but to no avail. Kyon is now presumed dead.

Boggs was initially charged with felony murder, but prosecutors decided against pursuing a murder charge because her son’s remains were never found. Instead, she was charged with tampering with physical evidence.

She was released on a no-cost bail, and was due back in court for a hearing on June 10.
