Australia’s southern states are bracing as a “series of cold fronts” prepares to unleash damaging winds, driving rain, and even snow and hail over the next several days.

Weatherzone said the conditions will endure for the next four to five days, warning “severe weather warnings are likely to be issued closer to the weekend”.

A complex low-pressure system was seen passing to the south of Western Australia on Wednesday, generating extreme winds – and another cold front is chasing hot on its heels.

“This brisk southwesterly airstream caused wind gusts of 98 km/h at Cape Leeuwin and 80km/h at Rottnest Island,” the weather service said.

“While wind was lighter in Perth early on Wednesday, the air was still moving fast enough to make 12-13C feel more like 8C shortly after 6am.”

Marine wind warnings are currently in effect for the Eucla Coast, Leeuwin Coast, Albany Coast and Esperance Coast.

Today a low of 8 degrees and a maximum of 17 degrees is forecast for Perth.

As the low tracks eastwards over today and Friday, similar conditions are forecast for parts of southeastern Australia.

A second cold front is expected to bring stronger wind gusts from Friday.

“Cold air behind the front will also produce small hail and highland snow in some areas, adding to the wintry feel of this system,” Weatherzone said.

“A second strong cold front will then reach SA on Friday before crossing southeastern Australia on Saturday.

“This system is likely to cause stronger winds, with damaging gusts possible in parts of SA, Vic, Tas, NSW and the ACT between Friday and Sunday.

“Showers, hail and snow are also likely near and in the wake of this powerful cold front.”

Today Sydney will experience mostly sunny conditions, with a low of 9 degrees and a high of 18 degrees.

It will be slightly chillier in Melbourne, where a minimum of 9 degrees and a high of 15 degrees is expected. Late showers are also on the cards.

Afternoon rain is also threatening to fall over Canberra, which will experience a cold 0-degree start before the mercury climbs to 12C.

Hobart has a low of 5 degrees on the forecast and a high of 14 degrees.

It will be mostly sunny in Brisbane. Temperatures will range from 11 degrees to 24 degrees.

Showers will fall over Adelaide, where temperatures will fluctuate between 10 degrees and 14 degrees.

And Darwin will be mostly sunny. A low of 21 degrees is forecast before the mercury climbs to 33 degrees.
