Manchester United have signed Altay Bayindir from Fenerbahce for £4.2million as cover for Andre Onana.

The 25-year-old, who is the first Turkish player to play for United, sorted a move after Dean Henderson went to Crystal Palace in a £15m switch on Thursday.

‘It’s a huge honour to join United and become the first Turkish player to represent this incredible club,’ Bayindir said.

‘I cannot wait to get started working with such an experienced goalkeeping unit. We will support each other and drive high standards every day so that each of us is ready to perform whenever called upon.’

United have been discussing a move for the Turkey international with his £4.25m release clause for several weeks as they looked to provide competition for Andre Onana’s as the club’s No 1.

Onana is back in the fold with Cameroon and United face being without him for a month in January due to the Africa Cup of Nations.

That means Ten Hag needs a dependable back-up that can slot in for the Cameroonian in his absence.

Bayindir made 40 appearances in all competitions as Jorge Jesus’ side finished second in the Super Lig, won the Turkish Cup and reached the Round of 16 in the Europa League before being knocked out by eventual winners Sevilla.

The Turkey international arrives on a deal through to 2027.
