Zlatan Ibrahimovic is no longer in MLS, but it appears there’s no love lost between him and his former foe Carlos Vela.

The two were on opposite sides of Los Angeles’ MLS rivalry from 2018-19 (Vela is still with LAFC), and the former Galaxy man Ibrahimovic put up extremely gaudy numbers in the USA.

However, he was unable to lead his side to silverware in the City of Angels – a fact that Vela was eager to remind of when asked to compare the Swede’s impact in MLS to Lionel Messi’s.

Messi, meanwhile lifted a trophy with Inter Miami in his first month at the club, as he led the club to victory in the Leagues Cup over Nashville SC.

Miami is also in the US Open Cup final, and will face the Houston Dynamo on September 27.

Carlos Vela lifted MLS Cup with LAFC in 2022, but Zlatan Ibrahimovic was trophy-less in MLS

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi already has 11 goals for his new club in 10 appearances.

Vela actually played a direct role in denying Ibrahimovic a trophy, as his LAFC defeated the Galaxy 5-3 in the 2019 Western Conference semifinals.

Vela scored twice in that game, while Ibrahimovic had one goal.

The Mexican’s team, which finished the 2019 regular season with the league’s best record, won MLS Cup last season thanks to a last-minute winner from Gareth Bale.

Vela was named the league’s MVP in 2019 and has nine goals and five assists in MLS play this season.

Ibrahimovic ended his MLS stay with an impressive 52 goals in just 56 appearances.

LAFC are second in the Western Conference with nine games before the playoffs and will be eyeing another MLS Cup.
