The lights went out on Jude Bellingham’s brilliant start at Real Madrid as Atletico won the Spanish capital derby 3-1.

Alvaro Morata scored twice either side of a goal from Antoine Griezmann and Carlo Ancelotti’s side could muster nothing more than a goal from distance from Toni Kroos.

Bellingham was out on the pitch, stood alone in the centre-circle, no sooner had he climbed off the visiting Madrid team bus. This was his first derby and one he wanted to savour.

First Morata headed in Samu Lino’s cross and then Griezmann did likewise from Saul’s assist.

Madrid opted not to sign a centre-forward in the summer beyond Joselu and he was left on the bench as Madrid tried to confuse their rivals without an attacking reference. It was the visitors who were most confused.

Kroos scored his first goal in a Madrid derby 10 minutes before half time and Ancelotti tried to put things right tactically at the restart.

Plan B lasted no more than a minute as Morata had another free header on minute 46 from Saul’s centre and he buried it.

He has now scored eight goals so far this season – five for his club and three for his country.

Madrid still looked chaotic and were struggling to find Bellingham. There were more changes and Ancelotti’s team looked more like themselves in the last half an hour but Jan Oblak never really looked like conceding again.

And to cap a frustrating night Bellingham’s late rash challenge on Angel Correa earned him his first yellow.

The Atletico Madrid bench were on the pitch in protest that the card wasn’t red. They were on the pitch again moments later when the full-time whistle was blown.

‘I want to be an important player here’ said Morata who was urged by his manager to score 18 goals this season is already well on the way, level on five league goals with Bellingham who had a forgettable first Madrid derby.

Aletico Madrid had come into the game having won only one of the last 14 Madrid derbies. But they had also not lost at home since the start of the year.

Real Madrid knew a win would send them top but instead they find themselves looking up at leaders Barcelona having failed their first big test of the season.
