Manchester United slipped to their sixth Premier League defeat of the season as they were beaten 1-0 by Newcastle at St James’ Park on Saturday night.

The Magpies ran out deserved winners after piling on the pressure after the interval, with Anthony Gordon tapping home Kieran Trippier’s cross in the 55th minute to seal all three points.

United threatened late on, but had a goal disallowed when Harry Maguire deflected home Antony’s strike from an offside position.

Mail Sport’s Chris Wheeler picks out some things you may have missed from before and during the game.

United’s lengthy coach trip

Erik ten Hag and his players had to take the team bus journey to Tyneside after Manchester United’s flight was cancelled on Saturday morning.

Manchester Airport escaped the worst of the cold snap but the plane due to take United to the north-east was unable to take off from Humberside.

The squad dropped off their cars at the airport at 10am but instead of making the short 30-minute flight to Newcastle, they had a three-hour journey on the team bus.

United were looking into the possibility of flying back to Manchester on a different plane after the match.

Newcastle fans turn up the heat

It wasn’t quite the Welcome to Hell reception United got in Istanbul in midweek but, like Galatasaray, Newcastle had gone to some length to turn up the heat on their visitors.

Three banners were displayed in the Leazes End before kick-off: one of Eddie Howe with clenched fists along with two quotes from the Newcastle manager, ‘We Don’t Surrender’ and ‘Let’s Give it to Them’.

They were taken from the Amazon documentary We Are Newcastle United in which Howe fired up his players to beat United last season after Ten Hag suggested they were guilty of time-wasting.

Tindall unhappy at time-wasting

Talking of time-wasting, Newcastle certainly weren’t happy when Harry Maguire took an age to tie his shoelaces midway through the first half with United under the cosh.

Howe’s assistant Jason Tindall made his feelings known to fourth official Graham Scott on the touchline, and Ten Hag also had his say the Newcastle No.2.

Ten Hag and Martial’s tetchy exchange

Ten Hag and Anthony Martial had a tetchy exchange as they headed into the dressing-room at half-time.

The mood was just as frosty when they shook hands as Martial made way for Rasmus Hojlund in the second half.

The erratic Frenchman impressed in the win at Everton last week, scoring a goal and winning a penalty, but this was a return to the furiously ineffective Martial as he struggled to lay a glove on Newcastle.

Free-scoring Newcastle highlight United’s woes

Newcastle have scored 19 Premier League goals at St James’ Park this season, two more than United have managed home and away.

It’s been a different story in the Champions League with United scoring 12 to Newcastle’s five – the only problem for Erik ten Hag is that United have conceded 14 and Newcastle only five.

Newcastle shut out United again

This was a third clean sheet against United in three games for Newcastle, the first time they have had a hat-trick of league shutouts against the same opponents since November 1897.

Meanwhile, United have now not drawn any of their last 21 games, their longest run since 1893-94.

Gordon continues his stunning form

Anthony Gordon has had a hand in seven goals in his last eight league games, scoring four times and adding two assists, which is more than his previous 45 appearances. He is also the first Englishman to score in four successive home league games for Newcastle since Alan Shearer in 1999.
