A player who had an unmemorable loan stint at Liverpool during Jurgen Klopp’s first year in charge, has taken on a new job in the fifth of Spanish football.

Klopp was appointed as Liverpool manager in October 2015, and just three months later he made a surprising signing on loan for the remainder of the season.

His side were light in defence so they looked to a player that had almost signed a permanent deal with Southampton.

That player is former Tottenham, QPR and Cardiff City defender Steven Caulker.

‘I have expressed my desire to become a manager for a while now, and have just recently completed my UEFA B license.

‘I really look forward to the challenges of managing the dynamics of a changing room, stabilising our league position with some points on the board, and learning a new language.

‘Alongside playing and managing, I will also be coaching part of the academy in the afternoon to further develop my coaching skills and hopefully, attain my UEFA A license.’

Caulker previously revealed that he was ‘s***ing himself’ ahead of his Liverpool debut after he was thrown on as a forward against Arsenal as a substitute.

He also questioned whether he was sober after going out the night before.

‘I was sh***** myself and thought “I’m gonna start here,”‘ Caulker told the Under the Couch podcast. ‘Because they had seven centre-halves out injured.

‘And I was thinking “Oh my God, am I even sober? How the f*** am I going to do this?” That train journey up, I was panicking because I hadn’t been taking care of myself, I was a mess.

‘I don’t remember who played centre-half but [Klopp] put someone else in. He said to me ‘go warm up’ but we were losing 3-2. But he said “no, you’re coming on. I’m going to put you up front”.

‘We ended up getting the equaliser and after the game he just came over high-fiving me [and saying] that “they all think it’s crazy until it works.”‘

Since leaving Liverpool he played for Dundee and then four different Turkish sides.

Caulker had a brief spell at Wigan at the beginning of the year, but left after just two months.

In recent years, he has also played international football after switching allegiances to Sierra Leone where his grandfather is from.
