Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson has been declared stable in hospital but is undergoing tests after being taken ill during training on Thursday morning.

Palace cancelled their pre-match press conference that was due to take place as normal after the session, ahead of facing Everton in the Premier League on Monday night.

A short statement from the Eagles at the time read: “Unfortunately, today’s press conference will no longer take place as scheduled as Roy Hodgson was taken ill during this morning’s training session.”

The club later clarified that 76-year-old Hodgson had been taken to hospital.

“Following news that Roy Hodgson was taken ill during today’s training session, we can confirm that he is now stable and is currently undergoing tests in hospital. Everybody at the club sends their best wishes to Roy for a speedy recovery,” a second Palace statement explained.

Hodgson hails from Croydon and began his playing career in the Palace youth ranks in the early 1960s. After 41 years in management that had taken him all over the world, he finally took charge of his boyhood team in 2017 and held the job until departing Selhurst Park in the summer 2021.

The former England boss was expected to retire at that time, although while admitting that he was “stepping away from football for a while” he refused to confirm it would be for good. Indeed, Hodgson wound up taking up a short-term position at Watford less than a year later, before he was drafted in by Palace as a replacement for Patrick Vieira in March 2023.

Speculation about his job security had been growing amid recent poor results.
