A convicted sex offender tried to sexually assault a woman at knife point in a laundromat, only for his would-be victim to grab his weapon and fatally wound him, according to deputies out of St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana.
Nicholas Vincent Tranchant, 40, recently got out of prison and has a criminal history dating back to at least July 25, 2023, when he was convicted of indecent behavior with juveniles, state records show. Later, he was convicted on May 15, 2008, for attempted aggravated rape for he was released from prison on Dec. 21, 2023, but he had to register as a sex offender for life.
Deputies claim that he attacked a woman at an area laundromat in the community of Lacombe, a community to the north of Lake Pontchartrain and New Orleans.
Authorities said they first got a call about an unresponsive man with an apparent stab wound, but while on the way there, they got dispatched to a call regarding a woman who said she had stabbed a man who attacked her in the laundromat.
“An investigation into to the incident revealed that Tranchant, a convicted sex offender, had entered the laundromat armed with a sharp weapon and was attempting to sexually assault the female when she fought back,” authorities wrote. “The female was able to gain possession of the weapon, and used it to stab him before fleeing to safety.”
Tranchant died at a hospital. The woman got hurt during the attack and was taken to a hospital, where she is getting treatment, authorities said.
“I want to compliment this brave woman on the courage and strength she showed in fighting back against her attacker and ask for prayers for her continued recovery,” Sheriff Randy Smith said.
