The Price Is Right host Drew Carey revealed he’d lost ‘1000lbs’ over the years as he candidly discussed his weight loss transformation after a dire warning from his doctor.

The star, 65, shed a whopping 80lbs after he was warned his lifestyle would significantly impact his lifespan, revering his Type 2 diabetes by cutting out carbs  and doing 45 minute cardio workouts several times a week.

He told People: ‘I would go out to Swingers diner after The Price Is Right my first year, get a plate of pasta, a cupcake and iced tea with a bunch of lemons. Then I’d go home, have Doritos and several Pepsis, and take an Ambien to go to sleep. It was miserable to live like that.’

He recalled his doctor telling him: ‘If you don’t do something, your life’s going to be shorter, and you’ll have these bad things to look forward to.’

The star was motivated to overhaul his entire lifestyle, saying sticking to a healthy diet and exercise was ‘freeing’ for him.

He said: ‘It’s better being like this and having my blood sugar at these levels, and I love myself enough now to want that for myself and desire that for myself. It’s a whole kind of change of mindset that you have to have about your whole life. … but once you do, it’s so freeing.’

He said he will still indulge in cake and other treats ‘once in a while’ but will have a small portion rather than ‘the whole cake like I did before.’

And while Carey, 65, still keeps carbs at bay, he sometimes makes exceptions.

He said: ‘I like the energy I have now, I like how I feel, and I like the lucidity I have in my thoughts. It’s just a better attitude all the way around. That’s part of my happiness now, is being able to look in the mirror and go, ‘Oh, I like my haircut, I like my face, I like the way I’m dressed, and I look good in this.

‘I don’t have to sit in a corner or apologize to myself in my head when I’m talking to somebody, you know what I mean? All these things you do when you’re overweight or you think something’s wrong with you.’

He added that realizing he was ‘worth it’ was the first step to loving himself and taking the weight loss journey.

This comes after Carey revealed he finally has closure on his ex-fiancee’s murder after her killer was sentenced to life in prison last year.

Gareth Pursehouse, 45, was hit with the maximum sentence in December 2023 for the brutal 2020 murder of 38-year-old Amie Harwick at her Hollywood Hills home.

Carey dated sex therapist Harwick for two years before the pair split in 2018, months after announcing their engagement.

Speaking to People he said: ‘I can barely remember the guy’s name — that’s how much I’ve put him out of my life — but ever since the final sentencing, it feels like we’ve all let out a breath and are able to finally move on.

‘The whole process is over now, and there’s nothing else to be done and nothing else to worry about. … Just speaking just for myself, it’s been quite a load off.’

Four years after her death Carey keeps Harwick close by keeping pictures of her in his home and a snap of her in his dressing room which he looks at on his way out of the door every day en-route to set.

He said: ‘She’s with me always. A lot of times I’ll feel like I’ll be thinking things through, and it’s almost like I can hear her voice saying, “Well, really, it’s because of this and that.” It’s really nice, honestly.’

Carey has previously said he and Harwick shared a ‘love that people are lucky to have once in a lifetime.’

In September, Pursehouse was convicted of first-degree murder for killing his ex-girlfriend – Harwick – after stalking her for 10 years following a bad breakup.

Harwick dated her killer Pursehouse until 2011 when they broke up and she got a protective order against him and told friends she was afraid of him.

Prosecutors said he broke into Harwick’s Hollywood Hills home in February 2020 and waited for about four hours for her to return in an attempt to ‘catch her by surprise’ while he was carrying a syringe containing a ‘lethal’ dose of nicotine.

The former Playboy model was found unconscious after falling from a third-floor balcony in her home.

An autopsy report determined sex therapist Harwick died from blunt force injuries to the head and torso from a fall after an altercation.

Carey had been subpoenaed to testify in the murder trial after he exchanged text messages with Harwick two days before she died.

The sentence also stipulates that Pursehouse will never be granted parole during his incarceration, which will commence immediately at a California state prison.

It is the maximum amount allowed after executions were halted by Gavin Newsom.

Although the star was not present at Wednesday’s sentencing, Carey previously spoke about Harwick’s murder in a 2022 interview with 48 Hours.

There, he shared the final text exchange he shared with his ex two days before she was killed, while revealing she had been worried about Pursehouse even while they were dating.

‘When I heard that she got murdered, right away, I thought: “It’s gotta be that guy,”’ the former Whose Line Is It Anyway host said at the time.

‘I got a text from her [two days before], ‘I would love to get together with you and talk,’ Carey continued. ‘I said, “Yeah, I would love to do that. I love you.”‘

When 48 Hours correspondent Erin Moriarty asked if he was ‘sad’ he ‘never got that chance’, the comic teared up.

‘I never got it,’ he said. ‘I never had a chance to do it.’

At a point, the interview urged Carey that Harwick loved him, to which he responded: ‘That’s the big solace I get from it, is that she loved me… And I’m glad I could get that message to her before she died.’

‘I hope you’re lucky enough to have someone in your life that loves as much as she did,’ Carey said on Twitter in February upon learning of her death.

Harwick was a prominent Hollywood marriage and sex therapist. She appeared on TV and radio shows and wrote a book called The New Sex Bible for Women.

At sentencing, Harwick’s family and friends spoke about how they were affected by the murder, which prosecutors proved was premeditated.

Tom Harwick, the marriage and sex counselor’s father, said: ‘My name is Tom Harwick, and I am the forever grieving father of my dearly departed daughter Amie.’

‘I will be reading the following words from a paper out of fear I will forget, but you may be assured that these words are being recited from deep within my heart.’

‘I am totally grateful for the services you’ve rendered to me and my family during this horrible ordeal,’ he continued, adding, ‘justice to Amie has been served.’
