Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has insisted he remains happy at St. James’ Park, but confessed he plans to leave the club in the future.

Guimaraes quickly established himself as a key player for Newcastle following his switch from Lyon in January 2022, but reports suggest he could be made available for transfer this summer as the Magpies seek to raise money to avoid financial sanctions.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City have all been touted as potential suitors for Guimaraes, who confessed while away on international duty that he has no idea what the future holds for him.

“I don’t know exactly, I don’t know what’s going to happen,” he told the press. “I’m happy at the club, I never know what’s going to happen. We’ll try to get to European tournaments, I can’t say much about football. I don’ know what’s going to happen. I’m happy at the club.

“I’ve always wanted to play here, I’ve followed the Premier League. Everything’s been going well at Newcastle since I arrived, I play among the best. I plan to play here for a long time, but I’m also aiming to move in the future. I’m happy to be here in the league.”

In mainland Europe, Guimaraes has been linked with both Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain. Reports suggest his contract includes a release clause worth £100m.

Guimaraes went on to admit that Newcastle may be victims of their own success. They qualified for the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League in their first full season under the ownership of the Saudi Public Investment Fund and maintaining that standard has proven challenging.

“This season we have been struggling,” he explained. “I think we’ve had many problems with injuries and suspensions but this is part of the process. When I signed for the club I knew that this would happen.

“Things have happened too quickly. During my two years at the club, we reached a final, unfortunately, we didn’t win but we got there after 20 years which was massive for the club.

“Of course, I’m disappointed about our season but I think we still have a chance to finish at least seventh, Europa League or Conference League.”
