An AI-generated radio host in Australia went unnoticed for months

Workdays with Thy is a show aired by the Sydney-based radio station CADA. According to ARN Media, which owns the station, Financial Review confirmed that although Thy is powered by AI, both the voice and appearance are based on a real staff member from their finance team. The AI voice was developed using ElevenLabs technology, as initially mentioned in the newsletter The Carpet.

CADA’s online presence and the show itself do not mention that the host is AI-driven. The program is described as “Curated by our music experts, these tracks are trending or about to trend — be the first to hear them with Thy, so you can claim you knew them before they hit big,” according to the show’s promotion.

This situation is not isolated, with other AI-generated content going unnoticed. A case in point is the AI-created Microsoft Surface advertisement released in January, which has only now been publicly identified as AI-generated.

As reported by the Financial Review, Workdays with Thy first appeared on CADA’s website in November 2024, and its ratings suggest it “reaches at least 72,000 people.” Teresa Lim, the vice president of the Australian Association of Voice Actors, slammed ARN Media’s failure to disclose the use of an AI host. “Australian listeners deserve honesty and upfront disclosure instead of a lack of transparency leading them to trust a fake person they think is a real on-air person,” Lim wrote on LinkedIn.

“We’re trying to understand what’s real and what’s not,” ARN CEO Ciaran Davis told the Financial Review. “What we’ve learned is the power of the announcers we have.”
