Fetterman desperately backpedals after 'lifelong Republican' blunder

For months, political observers have speculated about whether Pennsylvania Democratic Senator John Fetterman might eventually leave the party and join the Republicans.

That speculation gained fresh attention at The Texas Tribune Festival, where Fetterman appeared alongside CBS News Chief Washington Correspondent Major Garrett. During the discussion, the senator seemed to mistakenly describe himself as a lifelong Republican.

The exchange began when an audience member asked why Fetterman did not simply become an independent, prompting the host to pose the question to him.

“Because I’m a lifelong Republican,” Fetterman answered.

Garrett immediately recognized the apparent political slip and corrected him.

“Democrat,” Garrett said.

The correction drew laughter from the crowd. Fetterman shook his head and laughed along as he realized the mistake.

“That’s a moment right there!” Garrett said. “That’s clippable, ladies and gentlemen! Circulate!”

At The Texas Tribune Festival this week, Fetterman mistakenly referred to himself as a “lifelong Republican”

Fetterman appeared to understand immediately that the awkward moment would likely spread across social media.

“I guarantee you, that’s gonna break through,” he said. “That’ll get clipped.”

The Pennsylvania senator later clarified his actual political affiliation.

“I’m a lifelong Democrat,” Fetterman said.

The festival gaffe was not the only recent moment in which Fetterman appeared to move well outside the traditional Democratic Party line.

Earlier in September, he delivered a video message to the Republican Midterm Convention in Dallas, where he offered strong praise for fellow Pennsylvania Senator Dave McCormick.

Fetterman’s unexpected appearance at the Republican gathering drew attention within his own party, particularly because of his warm remarks about McCormick.

“I have this opportunity to introduce this great American, a great senator, and yes, he’s in a different party. But I’m proud to count him as my great friend,” Fetterman said in the video.

He also briefly referred to President Donald Trump, noting the “iconic US Steel Mill” visible behind him. Fetterman said he would work with Trump to “fight and defend the steel way of life” in Pennsylvania’s Steel Valley.

Among Democrats, Fetterman’s increasingly independent stance and apparent willingness to challenge his party have sparked a fierce reaction.

Congressman Chris Deluzio, a Democrat representing one of the country’s top GOP-targeted congressional seats in Pennsylvania’s 17th district, called out Fetterman for being ‘too lazy to do it in person.’

In a statement after the speech, Fetterman said he wouldn’t leave the Democratic Party.

‘I’m a lifelong Democrat who votes overwhelmingly with my party – and should the Senate flip in November, I will still be the 51st vote that I ran on,’ he said in a statement released to The Washington Sun shortly after the video played.

Earlier in the summer, Fetterman however did reveal the ultimate red line that would make him abandon the Democrats.

‘If our party ever becomes — and just makes it official — the anti-Israel party, that’s when I would leave because that’s been a moral clarity for me,’ he shared at the event.

Fetterman also noted that his ‘long-term concern has been with the Democratic Party, as I am a member of that, is that our party is going to back away and turn their back to Israel.’

That same month, 103 of 211 Democrats in the US House of Representatives voted against providing aid to Israel, while 10 more of their colleagues voted ‘present’ on the measure.
