A nursing student in Texas, just days ahead of graduation, was tragically killed by her roommate during a dispute about their cats, according to local authorities.

Chester Lamar Grant, aged 40, is now facing a murder charge related to the April 26 incident that led to the death of 23-year-old Tamilore Odunsi, originally from the U.K., in Houston. At around 4 p.m., police responded to an apartment on the southern side of the city following a request for a welfare check. Upon arrival, officers received no response at the door. They then proceeded to check the back of the apartment, where blood was visible on the concrete patio. Inside, law enforcement found Odunsi in the kitchen, suffering from multiple stab wounds. Officers also discovered Grant in a bedroom with at least one stab wound. Tragically, Odunsi was pronounced dead at the scene while Grant was hospitalized with serious injuries.

According to local CBS affiliate KHOU, Houston police revealed that the two had been sharing the apartment for only a few months and had an argument concerning their cats. The altercation reportedly turned violent, leading to Grant allegedly stabbing Odunsi and subsequently attempting to take his own life. On Saturday, Grant was taken to Harris County Jail, where he is being held on a $500,000 bond.

Odunsi’s family started a GoFundMe account for the woman known on TikTok as Tami Dollars or TD.

“Tami was a beautiful soul, full of light, ambition, and kindness,” the fundraiser reads. “She was just 23 years old. A devoted Christian, she was a God-fearing young woman who found strength and joy in her faith. She had a deep love for her church community, where she was actively involved and always eager to serve others with humility and grace.”

She dreamed of becoming a nurse and wanted to work with children in her new career.

Odunsi was set to graduate from nursing school just a few days before her murder, her family said. Her death is “an unimaginable loss at a moment that should have marked the beginning of a bright and promising future.”

Grant is slated to appear in court on Monday.
