HOUSTON (KIAH) One person is dead and more than a dozen others were injured when gunshots broke out at a party in Southeast Houston.

The Houston Police Department (HPD) is investigating the shooting, which occurred shortly before 1 a.m. in the 6000 block of Cherryhill.

Witnesses told officers that the shooting began when an uninvited guest arrived. The guest was told to leave, but he opened fire before he could do so.

Witnesses reported that gunfire came from other directions as well, and police believe that residents may have returned fire.

According to HPD Asst. Chief Cantu, at least three minutes passed between the initial 911 call and when police got to the scene, where the shooting was still in progress.

“This scene is ongoing. Its still very complicated. It was chaotic from the get-go. Getting here, the officers did a great job in starting to conduct the scene.”

14 people were injured in total. Others were detained, but the suspect has not been identified.

Police spokesperson Jody Silva said Sunday that no arrests had been reported nearly 12 hours after the shootings.

Cantu urged any other person that was involved in the shooting, injured outside of the 14 victims reported to contact HPD Homicide 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers 713-222-TIPS.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
